A comparison of types of funeral
The choice of funeral type determines the venue, the order of events and the options available for organising the farewell. Here is an overview of the key differences – for families in Hanover and the surrounding area.
Cremation
The body is cremated and the ashes are placed in an urn. This allows for flexibility in the choice of final resting place – in a cemetery, a columbarium, in a woodland or at sea.
Burial in the Ground
The traditional coffin burial in an in-ground grave. In Germany, this is subject to a statutory 8-day deadline following death, as set out in the relevant state funeral law.
Urn burial
The interment of ashes following cremation, usually in a traditional urn grave in a cemetery – as distinct from tree, lake or columbarium burials, which are separate forms of interment.
Tree burial
The urn is buried at the roots of a tree, usually in a designated memorial woodland – a nature-friendly alternative to a traditional cemetery grave, usually without an individual headstone.
Burial at sea and burial at sea
The urn is buried at sea; in Germany, this can only be done using a water-soluble sea urn that has been specifically approved for this purpose, and usually as part of an accompanied voyage.
Diamond & Crystal
Some of the ashes are turned into a keepsake that relatives can keep – a complement to, rather than a substitute for, the actual burial of the remaining ashes.
FUNERAL
In colloquial language, it is often used as a synonym for a burial; in a broader sense, it also serves as an umbrella term for the entire funeral service. More about the funeral service.
